Biography
At the invitation of Nemesio Antuñez, Jaime Cruz joined the Taller 99 printmaking workshop in 1964, prior to completing a degree in fine art at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (1975). He was awarded the 'Premio de Dibujo y Grabado' at the annual Salón de Otoño de Valparaíso in 1963, and in the same year was awarded a scholarship by the División Cultural del Ministerio de Relaciones del Brasil, and used this to travel to Rio de Janeiro to join the printmaking workshop of the city's Museum of Modern Art. In 1965 he received the Premio Nacional de Grabado at the LXXV Salón Oficial de Santiago.
Cruz has realised a great number of exhibitions in the course of his career; these comprise significant collective shows, and solo exhibitions including Jaime Cruz, (Galería Carmen Waugh 1973); Mutaciones (Galería Época, 1976); Grabados de Jaime Cruz (Galería Época, 1977); Tres Carpetas de Jaime Cruz (Universidad Católica de Chile, 1981); Iconos (Galería del Cerro, 1984); Abstracciones Figurativas (Galería La Fachada, 1985); Jaime Cruz Grabados 86/87 (Escuela de Arte de la Universidad Católica de Chile, 1987); Mutaciones 87 ( Casa Larga Carmen Waugh, 1987); La Mutación: Estado del Alma Mater (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, 1994) and the retrospective Jaime Cruz. La Memoria del Grabador. Exposición seleccionada de Grabados 1960-1994 (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and Pinacoteca de la Universidad de Concepción (1994). In 1992 he was awarded a distinction for an individual work, a metal engraving from the series El Cantar de los Cantares, at the Budapest International Contemporary Art Fair in Hungary.
