Biography
Alex Flemming attended the open course in cinema at the Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP) between 1972 and 1974. During the seventies he produced several short films, showing these at festivals. He went on to take short courses in screen-print (with Regina Silveira and Julio Plaza) and engraving (with Romildo Paiva) and in 1981 went to New York; here he completed a project at the Pratt Institute, aided by a grant from The Fulbright Foundation. Flemming returned to São Paulo in 1984, and published the book Estado de Coma (State of Coma). The following year he moved to Berlin, where he currently lives and works.
From his first show in 1977 (Espaço Grife, São Paulo) to the present day Flemming's work has been consistently visible in solo exhibitions worldwide, winning considerable critical acclaim. He has also taken part in many significant collective exhibitions, including Images et Méssages d'Amérique Latine (1978, Centre Culturel de Villeparisi, Paris); Cotidiano/Arte. O Objeto - Anos 60/90 (1999, MAM/RJ, Rio de Janeiro and Itaú Cultural, Sao Paulo); Onde Está Você, Geração 80? (2004, CCBB, Rio de Janeiro) and four editions of the Bienal Internacional de Sao Paulo (1981, 1983, 1989, and 1991).
