Santos Chávez Alister Carinao joined Taller 99 at Nemesio Antunez’s invitation in 1961, where he was assistant to Delia Del Carril and a contemporary of printmakers including Jaime Cruz, Dionora Doudchittsky and Eduardo Vilches. Like much of his work, Siguiendo un astro may refer to the artist’s indigenous Mapuche heritage. The linocut features a number of motifs including the moon, which for the Mapuche is Kuyén, wife of Antú, the sun and creator spirit. Encouraged by Kuyén, Antú turned a star into a wife for their son and together they filled the world with plants, birds and butterflies. Siguiendo un astro may refer to this or related accounts from Mapuche mythology.
