Oswaldo Goeldi was one of the most important and influential exponents of print in Brazil, particularly the woodcut. Peixaria (Fish Market) is the earliest work in the exhibition, dating from around 1930, and displays the economical yet expressive style for which the artist became known through magazine and book illustration and exhibitions from the 1920s onwards. The fish market recurred often in Goeldi’s work, which often focused on street scenes and other aspects everyday life. Goeldi had studied in Switzerland and was influenced by artists associated with European Expressionism, particularly Alfred Kubin.
