Letycia’s asscociation with the Ateliê de Gravura at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ) in the late 1950s onwards coincided with her departure from purely figurative representation, although the abstraction she developed often tended to have a basis in the real world. This is visible in Composição mista and in this untitled aquatint, in which two dark U-shaped forms are joined together to suggest the human body, in a way that is very reminiscent of abstracted bodies found in indigenous art in Brazil. As with Composição mista Letycia uses the aquatint process to create contrasts, here between a tonal, textured background and the flat dark figure in the foreground.
