During the 1950s Rossini Perez studied under a number of Brazil’s leading printmakers, including Oswaldo Goeldi, Iberê Camargo and Fayga Ostrower. Dating from this time, Palafitas is a linocut showing dense cluster of houses made on stilts. The concentration on local subject matter, in this case Brazilian vernacular architecture, echoes both Goeldi and Lívio Abramo, although the geometrical structure owes more more to the latter and anticipates the increasingly abstract direction his work was taking. In 1959 he worked alongside Edith Behring as an assistant to Johnny Friedlaender at the Ateliê de Gravura at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ), where he taught until 1961.
